The cost of college textbooks has escalated dramatically in the past three and a half decades, increasing more than 800 percent, and students are feeling the financial pinch. The U.S. Public Interest Research Group reported 70 percent of surveyed students at more than a dozen colleges did not purchase required textbooks because they couldn't afford the high price. In some cases, this is as much as 75 percent of the average tuition rate.
